A Letter to my Little Girl...

Dear  Delaney,

Well you passed through your "terrible two's" and became a 3 year-old!!  I am so proud of you and was so excited for your birthday because I know you were looking forward to it for a month!

[Getting ready to get the party STARTED!]

Even though I really tried to persuade you into a Princess Sofia party, or Little Mermaid, or Dora, you chose Buzz Lightyear!  I had to pass all the purple-pink decorations at the Party Store and head towards the boy aisle of lime green and blue. Right now, you are my little tomboy.  On the fourth of July, you wanted the lady making balloon animals to make you a sword, rather than a cute animal.  Yet, you love to wear twirly dresses and put on lots and lots and lots of lip gloss.

I was finally able to conquer attempt a french braid this summer, which was a major accomplishment for me.  You still "technically" have a mullet and I'm waiting for the sides of your hair to match the back, but all in good time.

You really like to say "sure, okay" instead of "yes" and "WHY?" about 400 times a day.  You have debuted a new smile, which can be seen in the first picture...

You say your prayers every night which usually includes
"Thank you for Jesus, thank you for providing for our bodies. Amen,"

which is more true than you even realize.

Enjoying the Indiana State Fair

Your very best friend and worst enemy is Harper- you play together wonderfully until you both want the same toy...You love "kikalay" (chick-fil-a), which is okay by me, because I think I could eat there everyday.

You love to take care of your baby dolls very carefully right now and slowly feed them and give them bottles.  I know that you are going to be a wonderful big sister in October and I can't wait for you to be my big helper!
Helping your daddy paint your bookshelves

When I tell you I "love you a bunch" you always so "NO, a baby much" and hold up a pinch finger.  I know to you this means the world, even though it makes me laugh 'cause it looks like you love me just a smidge.

Love forever and ever,

Your mommy

P.S. I love you a baby much too.

The Summer in Pictures

We have had a great summer here in Indiana.  It has been the mildest summer that I can remember and I have even worn jeans, rather than shorts, on more than one occasion.  Most of the kids in this area, including my nephew, returned to school today, giving a feeling that summer is over.  We still technically have a month left, but I wanted to share some photos of our summer so far...

Baby News, Jewelry News, and stuff in between...

Well the month of June completely passed me by and I never blogged a thing.  Whoops.  June was a bit of a crazy month.

We sold our house, bought a new house, moved in, had an outdoor jewelry show, had a garage sale, set up our new jewelry studio, celebrated birthdays, and found out some news about our  baby that results in a lot more doctors visits and a lot more prayer.

Mark and I are having a baby boy!  Woo-hoo!  We ALMOST have a name picked out, but not ready to have it embroidered on any quilts quite yet.  However, an ultrasound a few weeks ago discovered the baby has gastroschisis...I mean a mother with scleroderma and her son with gastroschisis (can we just get some normal medical jargon in this family for once without having to google?!).  We were immediately sent to the high risk doctors so that they could take a look.  It turns out his intestines are on the outside of his body right now just floating around like it's cool.  It is actually somewhat common and is MORE common in Indiana for some unknown reason (I like to blame crop pesticides, but since Mark is an engineer for crop sprayers, I don't know if he will agree:)

When people refer to the "good old days", I can't help but be happy I live in 2013. If I lived in 1950, there would be nothing we could do and our little son would not survive, but because of today's technology he *should* be fine.  As soon as he is delivered, they will sweep him away and surgeons will set him up to "stick his intestines back in" as my doctor so eloquently phrased it (with hand motions and all like she was packing a suitcase).

We are so fortunate to live only 20 minutes from the BEST children's hospital in the country (Riley), but it is unknown whether our boy will spend a couple of weeks in the NICU or a couple of months.  There are a LOT of unknowns, but we are hopeful and prayerful for a smooth recovery.  I also can't help but praise God because it could be worse.  It could be a lot worse.  This is "fixable" and there might be some lifelong complications, but nothing that cannot be "fixed" by additional surgeries down the road.

Our son was originally due November 1st, but because of this, he will be induced in early October to lower the risk of complications.

Which is why, as mentioned on our facebook page, we are unsure what this fall/Christmas season will bring.  We are planning and preparing for the holiday season ALREADY so that I can be at the hospital and focus on my son and not whether or not I stamped a copper disc in the correct font.

We are running a Christmas in July sale to encourage you to order early!  If you had planned to order for Christmas, this is a great time to get 15% off your ENTIRE purchase.  We are continuing to introduce new necklaces, which I hope to share later this week!

Balancing being a stay-at-home mom and a stay-at-home employee

via pinterest

I have been struggling lately.

I guess I can blame pinterest or facebook or blogs or the internet in general, but I have been feeling like a lousy mother (and this is not one of those posts to encourage you to say "no, you're not!- 'cause those posts drive me crazy).

When I was teaching, I would dream about the day I would be a "stay at home mom".  I would keep the house clean.  I would cook dinner every night.  I would enjoy going grocery shopping.  I would do a daily craft with my child and have indoor and outdoor playtime.  I would structure the time, so it would be organized- breakfast, playtime, craft, lunch, more playtime, puzzles, nap... And when they were a little older, we would do fun (but educational) activities every day.  During the summer, we would swim every day, like I did as a child.  Mark would get home from work, and we would tell him about our day and sit down to a home cooked meal.

Shortly before I had Delaney, I co-started a jewelry business.  It was going to be great- a little extra income on the side, so I could still stay at home when I had kids, but didn't have to work in the evenings at a retail job for some extra cash.  What is amazing is a few months before it started, I specifically remember praying,

"LORD, help me to find a job that I can do from home- that I can use my creativity and artistic skills and still provides us extra income."

The Lord answered my prayer.

He ANSWERED my prayer.

Almost four years later, and Tag...You're It is BOOMING.  My sister and I hired my father to help us last fall and recently hired my mother to help us also.  We are moving to a new house next month because we needed more room for JEWELRY (and another baby, but mainly the jewelry I think).  I am currently sitting here with an open queue of roughly 380 orders I need to go stamp for Father's Day.  I know the Lord has blessed the business in huge ways, but...

Sometimes I want to quit.  Sometimes I feel like I need to spend every hour of every day in a hands-on activity with my toddler.  It seems the mantra of the mommy society today is "simplify" and "less is more" and that being busy is always bad and something that needs to be avoided.

However, I have been reading the versus of the Proverbs 31 woman a lot lately.  If you are unfamiliar, you can find it HERE.

She is a woman I strive to be like and yet, that woman is busy.
I mean she is BUSY!

She is up when it is still dark and goes to bed super late.  She works with her hands.  She makes stuff, and sells it (that's my favorite part).  She seems to dabble in real estate and farms the land she buys.  She is not lazy, she speaks with wisdom, and she FEARS the LORD.  She is not relaxing anytime soon, and I don't know if she was able to do a daily pinterest craft with her toddler, 'cause she is too busy making them clothes to wear and feeding the poor.

I am not saying this as an excuse to not spend time with your kids.  Holy Moly, I still usually cry a little in the car if Del spends the night with her grandparents one evening every few months and she is almost three.  I just think that sometimes I think that being busy means I am being unbiblical.  That a good mom spends all of her time in a hands-on activities, like working puzzles with her child, cooking nutritious meals and never has to tell her child "go watch your movie, I have to get this work done".

I like to remember that the Proverbs 31 woman is busy and her children and husband STILL call her blessed.  I know I am not superwoman.  I know that I am not even the Proverbs 31 woman.  And I know that worry, anxiety, and stress are NOT things I want in my life and are not of God.  But if I am trusting in Him and trying to do everything for His glory, including working from home and raising a family, he will give me the energy and ability to balance it all.

InstaFriday!

Oh, my poor neglected blog.  I feel like I have been SO busy lately.
When Delaney does occasionally take an afternoon nap, I think about blogging.
But, then I think about watching Dr. Phil instead, and it usually wins out.
Until Mark gets home and says
"Why are you watching this, I don't even think he is a real doctor!"
and I say
"I KNOW, but this man was married for 30 years and has 10 kids and left them all for a 19 year old girl and his family is trying to cope"
'cause that is my justification of it being okay to watch.

I missed Dr. Phil yesterday though, so I could get some blogging time.  There is a LOT going around this house.
We are trying to move, so we are showing the house, which means my house is the cleanest it will ever be.  It also means that in the middle of the day, I have to pack up my toddler, niece, dog, dad, sister, and laundry and throw them in the car 'cause somebody wants to see the house
(okay, I'm not throwing my dad or sister, but you get the point).

Delaney had her first haircut and took her first airplane ride this spring, when we visited family in Hawaii.  I found out I own the world's most expensive dog when he tore the ACL in his other leg, making it his SECOND $2,000 surgery in a year (and he doesn't even play football).

But our biggest announcement will be told in pictures....all I can say is that this will be one crazy Christmas season!

Thumbprints, Signatures, and Random Information, Oh My!

So, here is some random information about me... I don't really have a "fingerprint".  I mean, when I look at my fingers, I can see lines, but they don't really show up.  My scleroderma has smoothed the skin on my fingertips, so I can pretty much commit any crime I want.  When I tried getting fingerprinted for student teaching eight years ago or so, the woman finally gave up because she was getting no impression.  When I worked at a day care that required a fingerprint entry, they tried every finger and finally gave up and I had to be buzzed in every time I re-entered the building because my fingerprints didn't "work."

So even though I might not be adding my fingerprint to a necklace, I will definitely be making one with my daughter's fingerprint.  We just added fingerprint jewelry to our shop and I think it is absolutely beautiful.

It is a very lengthy process, but I think the end result is definitely worth it.  They are made of FINE silver (this means it is 99.9% silver, where sterling is 92.5% silver!) We have also added some "signature" designs.  This can include a signature from a loved one, a child's signature, or perhaps your child's artwork.  These have already been a hit in our shop and it makes my heart happy to hear about customers looking through old birthday cards to find a signature from their mother or father.

The Mother's Day deadline is April 20th, so be sure to get your order in before that date!!
